Abstract. Security cameras have been around for decades and they continue to grow in number and capabilities as time passes. These days, in addition to the security nature of these cameras, they can be also used to obtain relevant information about the scene. Counting people and classifying them by gender, age, weight, height, or other attributes are very useful for marketing purposes and much more. Detecting anomalous events, like a suspicious luggage left unattended in a crowd or a person falling on subway rails could improve security in many spaces that are frequented by large masses of people. Extracting such data from video streams can have many more uses, some of which are not even imagined yet. In this paper we present how object recognition, tracking and classification methods can be used in conjunction to offer a solution for the problems described above.

Keywords: people counting, people profiling, deep learning, computer vision, object recognition.

Large-scale accessibility evaluation of Romanian municipal websites

Abstract. The Digital Agenda for Europe has clear objectives as regards the enhancement of digital literacy, skills, and inclusion. Poor web accessibility has a negative impact on the inclusion of citizens and customers in the provision of online services. In this respect, web accessibility is a critical precondition for a barrier-free Europe. Recently, a new European directive has been issued that requires the web accessibility of public sector bodies by September 2020, the latest. This paper reports on a large-scale evaluation of the accessibility of municipal websites in Romania. The evaluation has been carried on in June-July 2019 and targeted 186 websites. The sample includes all towns having a population of over 10,000 inhabitants. Overall, these towns account for 92% of the total urban population. The results show that web accessibility is low, only one website passing the requirements of WCAG 2.0. The comparison with previous evaluation results shows little progress and could be explained by low accessibility awareness, weak accessibility policy at country and local level, and bad practices in web development.

Keywords: web accessibility, municipal websites, local e-government, WCAG 2.0

Abstract. Writing is an essential skill in the digital era, whether we are referring to essays, books, discourses, emails, or newsletters. Writing transcends individual words or sentences, and it considers the structuring of ideas and their presentation in a coherent manner. Document writing may involve an additional contributor besides the writer who produces the text, namely an evaluator whose task is to provide feedback for improvement. However, both authors and evaluators can experience anxiety in performing their tasks. Similarly, tutors may have limited time to perform in-depth writing assessments of their students’ productions. The system presented in this paper – ReadME – aids both by providing automated methods for writers to evaluate their texts and improve them based on several layers of personalized suggestions. Moreover, evaluators have access to an automated evaluation and scoring mechanism performed by our system, thus being able to provide feedback in a timely manner. Advanced Natural Language Processing techniques are employed, designed currently to process texts written in Romanian and English languages.

Keywords: Essay Writing, Text Analysis, Automated Writing Evaluation, Learning Management System, Natural Language Processing.

Abstract. Edutainment is a worldwide known concept, adopted by many countries for its educational uses and studied in various forms, unfortunately less explored in the Romanian teaching-learning space due to other priorities regarding education. The lack of case studies related to this concept in the Romanian educational space brings the opportunity to adapt the concept to the needs of preschoolers and teachers. Technology became a part of everyday life and its usage should be oriented to the benefit of the next generations. This paper is a report of introducing edutainment applications into the formal kindergarten system, as introducing was seen as a process consisting in: a) understanding users’ needs, b) co-design, and c) actually introducing them into a class in kindergarten. All the applications were built by students attending the HCI optional course for undergraduate Computer Science students.
